Distance learning offers flexibility for ongoing employee development

CLEVELAND, Ohio--In today's highly competitive environment, forward-thinking transportation services companies are encouraging employees-- including managers--to pursue training that directly improves personal and organizational productivity, particularly when options for distance learning are available to reduce travel costs and time away from the office associated with traditional classrooms.

Trimble Transportation, Inc., North America's largest provider of software for the transportation industry, has launched a new series of free online webinars designed for customers of its Asset Maintenance software products. In a compact 45-60 minute seminar, attendees can re-acquaint themselves with core components and extended modules for the software they use regularly and gain exposure to valuable new capabilities. Trimble Transportation added the webinars to augment its successful TMW University (TMWU) program of classroom-based software education. While the free webinar sessions will continue to focus on product overviews, the popularity of these online offerings has lead to plans to offer modified classroom content from TMWU online in longer formats as well.

Similar sessions will be available soon for TMW's popular Optimization software including IDSC ExpertFuel, IDSC Netwise and IDSC TripAlert, covering topics such as optimal Fuel Purchasing and Bid Processing.

TMW is also extending its online classes to include content from some of its valued partners. These sessions are designed to introduce customers to valuable integrated solutions for cost containment and improved profitability. For senior management training, TMW has teamed with the TRINCON Group to provide sessions sessions of particular value to bulk and truckload carriers. TRINCON, based in Columbus, Ohio, holds regularly scheduled online classes to help foster better management practices, especially regarding cost-based activity accounting and centralized management for operational efficiencies.

As part of its enhanced relationship with EBE Technologies, TMW will also host a short webinar introducing Integrated Data Interchange from EBE, a product platform designed to dramatically reduce man-hours associated with updating shipper and freight payment websites with transactional data. EBE, based in Moline, Illinois is the developer of SHIPS, a system of workflow and document management solutions are uniquely tailored for trucking companies and brokers.

TMW University, the ongoing education program that now serves all TMW product lines, has scheduled classroom courses that offer advanced training or beginner immersion in enterprise transportation software, optimization software and asset maintenance technologies. For the convenience of customers located across North America, classes take place at TMW offices in Cleveland, Dallas, Durham, Indianapolis and Vancouver. Class length ranges from one-to-five days and topics cover critical tools and processes such as Crystal Reports writing, brokerage productivity and negotiation tools, streamlining driver settlements, EDI, management KPI dashboards and much more. Students come from all areas of a company's organization--dispatch, IT, fleet maintenance, accounting and the executive suite.

Take Teri Lohr who works for transportation and supply chain innovator Jacobson Companies of Des Moines, Iowa. Teri's job entails using TMW applications for her company which offers integrated services, including warehousing & distribution; transportation and asset-based solutions; freight management and more. Jacobson is a long-time TMW customer and is among the largest 3PL providers in the U.S.

"When I attended TMW University, I had a pretty good working knowledge of TMWSuite. Immediately after the weeklong class, I walked away knowing that there are so many hidden treasures inside the software. I discovered how to tailor the system to meet our company's needs and-just as important-to have the flexibility to meet the needs of our customers," she said.

"My SQL Server class experience? I would mark this as excellent training," noted Senior Systems/Database Developer Jerzy Milosiewicz of Transfreight Inc., of Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. "We heard complete answers to our questions and covered topics which are not mentioned in any SQL database-related books. After training we were able to provide much more specific feedback to the TMW team and the end result was improved application performance which our users notice." Transfreight, which was named a Top 100 3PL Provider by Inbound Logistics magazine, is recognized for engineering unique, lean supply chain solutions.

Jeanette Snyder is employed by Ameri-Co Carriers, Inc., and based at its headquarters in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. The company is a leading truckload carrier specializing in dry van, flatbed and dedicated service in the Continental U.S. and Canada. Last year, she made it a point to take a class.

"The TMWU class, iSeries Query Training, proved beneficial with quality material and individualized attention," said Snyder, adding, "the instructor was clear, informative and directed the class around our individual needs within our individual companies. This training session has been a valuable tool for our company and has greatly improved our data mining capabilities for better operational controls."
